What is metadata? Where does it come from? What does it look like? How do I choose the right schema? What does it mean to map, expose, and repurpose metadata?
Following a question and answer format, you'll explore:
- The basic concepts of metadata, including
definitions,
- Identifying sources and types,
- Aspects to consider regarding interoperability, and
- How to assess how much metadata is enough?
Understanding these basic metadata questions will help you make good metadata choices at your local institution!
Chicago-Area Archivists (CAA) will continue to offer a series of webinars that are part of the SAA Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) curriculum to train practicing archivists and their managers to appraise, capture, preserve, and provide access to electronic records.
The DAS curriculum is made up of a series of structured workshops and webinars in the following categories: Foundational, Tactical and Strategic, Tools and Services, and Transformational. In all, SAA offers 23 courses. Those interested in a Digital Archives Specialist certificate must take 9 courses over a two-year period and pass online exams within a week after each course. "A Beginner’s Guide to Metadata," from the Foundational category, is the third DAS offering from CAA. Designed especially for practitioners, the webinar will be held at Northwestern University Library on September 27, 2012 at 6 p.m.

The webinar will be held in the Forum Room at Northwestern University Library, 1970 Campus Drive, Evanston, IL 60208. Please feel free to bring an unobtrusive brown-bag dinner/snack to this evening presentation.
The library is located near the south end of the Evanston campus and is easily accessible from the Foster El stop and Davis Metra station.
