Day of Service 2018 at American Indian Center
Sunday, May 6
10AM - 4PM

Volunteer your professional skills or learn new ones at a Day of Service to benefit the American Indian Center at their new location in Albany Park.

Serving nearly 65,000 American Indians living in the Chicagoland region, the American Indian Center (AIC) fosters community through social and cultural resources that encourage education, the preservation of tradition, and multi-generational bonds. On May 6, volunteers will work to organize, rehouse, and inventory the archive including slides, photographs, manuscripts, books, postcards, and potentially other materials. This effort to stabilize AIC collections after a recent move will not only help to preserve this historically valuable archive of the American Indian population in our region, but it will also promote accessibility to both staff and the public, and enable the AIC to build on recorded information by sharing the collection at community events and exhibitions. On the day of the event, The Director of the AIC will give an introduction to the history of the community center and take people on a tour of Tribal Hall and the current exhibit.

Work Site

The American Indian Center is located at 3401 W Ainslie in Albany Park.

The site is conveniently located near public transportation. It is one block away from the Kimball Brown Line Stop, and is on the 82 Kimball Bus and 81 Lawrence Bus lines. If you have a disability that prevents you from accessing the work site but would like to volunteer, please register and then write to info@chicagoarchivists.org with Day of Service in the subject line so that the organizers can make advance accommodations.

For lunch, there are several options a short walk away or volunteers can bring a brown bag meal, there is a microwave available for use.

Participants must be at least 18 years old.
