Position Description: The Chicago History Museum is hiring a Project Archivist to assist the Collections staff in assessing and creating processing plans for collections related to themes of faith and religion in the social and urban history of Chicago, as identified by curatorial staff as part of the Chicago Sacred collections assessment project.  This is a Full-Time temporary position for 420 hours for approximately 12 weeks. The pay rate for this position is $20 per hour.

Position Duties

· Survey and assess identified manuscript and visual materials collections for original order, conservation needs, extent, format, and informational/research value other processing considerations  

· Develop processing plans that address priority, arrangement and description, preservation concerns, and copyright/custodial issues, as well as, estimates for processing time and supplies   

· Investigate and resolve outstanding questions about collection copyright, including possible collaboration with other Museum staff and administrators.   

· Research context for collection materials, including custodial paperwork   

· Identify possible candidates for digitization and facilitate digitization of selected materials within the collection based on copyright resolution.   

· Maintain collection records related to all materials assessed  

· Create and/or update electronic inventories for tracking assessment status.  

· Prepare progress reports.  

· Maintain, track, and order project supplies.  

· Participate in creation of blog post and other activities to promote discoverability of the collections.  

· Perform other related duties as assigned, including processing of collections as time allows.  

Preferred Qualifications

· Completion of or current enrollment in MLIS or comparable program (must include completion of archival coursework)  

· Knowledge of standard collection management, documentation, and preservation practices and procedures  

· One year of experience processing, handling, and researching archival collections in a museum, archive, or library setting, including experience with both manuscript and photographic materials.  

· Familiarity with current copyright standards and practices  

· Familiarity with Chicago area faith communities and/or religious or faith-based collections  

· Strong organizational and interpersonal skills  

· Good oral and written communication skills  

· Experience working with databases and data standards, including Encoded Archival Description (EAD) or experience with XML  

· Attention to detail  

· Ability to balance multiple tasks/responsibilities/demands for time  

· Ability to lift 50 lbs  

· Commitment to the mission, values, and programs of the Chicago History Museum
