Librarian and Archivist

ALA is seeking a Librarian & Archivist for its Library and Information Center (LIC) which is part of the ALA Offices and Member Relations (AOMR) department in our Chicago office.

Reporting to the Director, the position will be responsible for providing and maintaining, in person and digital reference services to the library’s clientele. The position is also responsible for daily office management tasks, such as billing, ordering, statistical reporting and file maintenance. Coordinates internal activities between ALA staff and the UIUC staff of the ALA Archives as well as interlibrary loan functions.

Key responsibilities include the following:

  •  Serves as primary liaison with the ALA Archives staff at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign regarding digital archiving, including ALAIR and the web archive. 
  • Provides guidance to ALA staff across all units in archiving of their print and digital materials. 
  • Supervises library student interns. 
  • Administers interlibrary loan (ILL) program.
  •  Responds to requests for information from staff, members, the library community, and the general public.
  • Serves as administrator for several library related database functions.
  • Monitors trends and issues that impact the library community and provides current awareness services to ALA units.
  • Responsible for day to day office management tasks, such as billing, ordering, statistical reporting, and file maintenance are also recurring responsibilities of this role.
  • Creates catalog records, both by copy cataloging for general collection (which includes ALA awards) and original cataloging for electronic resources. 


An MLS from ALA-accredited program; minimum of 3 years of experience working in a library or library related organization; experience in archives and/or special libraries; excellent communication and writing skills; knowledge of institutional repositories a plus. 

Starting salary range from the low 50’s; negotiable based on experience. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes medical, dental, generous paid vacation and a retirement annuity.
