As Chicago’s oldest cultural institution, the Chicago History Museum is the proud custodian of over 23 million objects. Ranging from presidential artifacts to 60’s couture, objects from two World’s fairs as well as remnants from the great Chicago Fire, we use our collection to powerfully tell Chicago’s stories. We invite qualified candidates to apply for the full-time or part-time temporary position of Project Archivist. (Thing Magazine Processing Project)  This is temporary assignment position with Advance Resources Staffing Agency.

To assist Collections staff in the processing of CHM’s archival holdings with a special focus on the Thing Magazine records, to ensure that materials are discoverable, accessible, and usable in support of the museum’s mission and purpose. Thing Magazine was an underground magazine on African American and LGBTQ life, arts, and culture published in Chicago from 1989 to 1993.

POSITION DUTIES:

  • Process materials in Thing Magazine papers (17 linear feet) including the assessment, arrangement, description, re-housing, transport and storage, and disposal or return of archival materials.
  • Investigate and resolve outstanding questions about collection copyright, including possible collaboration with other Museum staff and administrators.
  • Research context for collection materials, including outreach to collection donors.
  • Identify possible candidates for digitization and facilitate digitization of selected materials within the collection based on copyright resolution.
  • Create EAD encoded finding aid and catalog record content for upload to online public access system by Cataloger.
  • Maintain collection records related to all materials processed as part of the backlog processing initiative.
  • Create and/or update electronic inventories for tracking processing status.
  • Prepare progress reports.
  • Maintain, track, and order project supplies.
  • Participate in creation of blog post and other activities to promote discoverability of the collection.

Perform other related duties as assigned, including processing of other manuscript collections as time allows.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of or current enrollment in MLIS or comparable program (must include completion of archival coursework)
  • Knowledge of standard collection management, documentation, and preservation practices and procedures
  • Substantive experience processing, handling, and researching archival collections in a museum, archive, or library setting; experience with both manuscript and photographic materials preferred.
  • Knowledge of African American and/or LGBTQ history and/or experience with African American and/or LGBTQ history collections preferred
  • Familiarity with current copyright standards and practices
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working with databases and data standards, including Encoded Archival Description (EAD) or experience with XML
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks/responsibilities/demands for time
  • Ability to lift, move, and otherwise carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to ascend and descend stairs and ladders
  • Commitment to the mission, values, and programs of the Chicago History Museum
