Lunch & Learn: What's Your DAM? Media Burn Archive

Registration

CAA invites you to the second event in the Lunch and Learn series, What's Your DAM?

The guest speaker is Sara Chapman, who has been the Executive Director of Media Burn since 2009 and has been an integral part of the archive since its founding in 2003. She manages the preservation of the collection, oversees staff and interns, implements fundraising campaigns and grant proposals, and works closely with the researchers, educators, students, and filmmakers who use the archive on a daily basis. She also curates and organizes public events, such as the ongoing Chicago Lost & Found series. Her article "Guerrilla Television in the Digital Archive" was published in the Journal of Film and Video. In 2019, she was the producer of the feature-length experimental film, Ghosts in the Machine, which screened internationally.

Media Burn Archive is a nonprofit in Chicago that collects, preserves, and distributes videos produced by artists, activists, and community groups. The core belief behind Media Burn's work is that amplifying diverse voices leads to a better society. The collection represents an alternative, more equitable portrait of the 20th century than that found in traditional archives and museums. This includes the voices of people of color, women, LGBTQIA, differently abled, and indigenous people. Media Burn's primary activities include the preservation, cataloging, and digitizing of analog videotapes; distribution of the collection online as free streaming video; working with artists, researchers, and educators to enable re-use of the collection; and creating interactive public programming.
